Prof J du P Bothma´ career
During his career, he served on numerous national and international scientific councils, institutions and workshops, being a member, among others, of the Transvaal Museum Board, President of the South African Biological Society, President of the southern African Wildlife Management Association and Chairman of the Nature Conservation and Tourism Board of Qwa Qwa, a formerly independent region of South Africa. He also was the President of the Rugby Club of the University of Pretoria and served on the Managing Committee of the Northern Transvaal Rugby Union. His postgraduate students have worked in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Kenia and Saudi Arabia. He has also given papers at 36 national and 28 international conferences. Outside South Africa, these conferences were held in Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Switzerland, Hungary, Chile, Costa Rica, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Britain and the USA. To date he has written 155 popular-science papers and 101 refereed scientific papers for which he was either the main or a co-author. He has also acted as editor, author or co-author for 22 books, two of which deal with larger carnivores. His first book, as co-author, was Kaokoland - the last wilderness, while as editor, co-editor and co-author he has already produced 4 Afrikaans and 5 English editions of two books, Wildplaasbestuur and Game ranch management, which deal with extensive wildlife production in southern Africa. As editor with Dr Noel van Rooyen he has produced the book Intensive wildlife production in southern Africa in 2005. He has written a comprehensive book Of silk and sand which is based on 45 years of experience in the Kalahari and this book is only available on www.leopard.tv. He has acted as supervisor or co-supervisor for 52 MSc and 11 PhD students and has trained 429 BSc (Honours) students in wildlife management. |
