African civet behaviour

12 January 2016

QUESTION:

What is the African civet doing in the photo?

ANSWER:

It looks like the African civet is marking a rock.

Objects are scent-marked by a secretion from the everted perineal glands between the anus and genitalia. This secretion retains its strong smell for up to three months and was once used in perfume before it was replaced by synthetic compounds. Strong coffee that is scented with this secretion is regarded as a delicacy in some regions.
