Impala grazing behaviour

21 November 2013

QUESTION:

What are the impalas eating so close to the water?

ANSWER:

The impalas are grazing near the waterhole. A lack of salt in the diet can cause a wild herbivore to start to chew on old bones in the field (a condition that is known as pica). This can lead to diseases or disease conditions in wild herbivores. A salt deficiency will also lead to poor hair pigmentation, poor milk production, poor growth and low fertility.
