QUESTION:

Is it perhaps a cattle egret?

ANSWER:

This is a yellow-billed egret Egretta intermedia. These birds are sedentary and are sometimes confused with the cattle egret but its grey-black lower legs as opposed to yellow ones in the cattle egret are characteristic. It historically only occurred in Africa, South- and East-Asia but now occurs widely in the world. Its food mainly consists of insects and other invertebrate animals.
