Leopard spots

16 January 2014

QUESTION:

Is there a reason why the spots of a leopard look like this?

ANSWER:

Yes, the video shows the superb camouflage of a leopard well. This camouflage has developed after the forests that formerly covered all of Africa until some 5 million years ago started to be replaced by open woodland in the north and south. In the resultant dappled environment the black rosettes on a yellow background makes a leopard difficult to see with an untrained eye.
